Ítem A proposal for implementing PBL in programming courses(XL Latin American Computing Conference, CLEI 2014, 2014) Mora, Sonia; Coto, Mayela; Alfaro Salazar, GeorgesIn the search of teaching strategies more consistent with the current needs of the industry and with the new university pedagogical model, an action research project was carried in the programming courses of the study program of Systems Engineering at the Universidad Nacional of Costa Rica (UNA). The project gradually introduced the principles of autonomy, collaborative learning and shared assessment. This paper reports the experience gained during the three years of the project in terms of a specific proposal for implementing the three principles in the area of programming. Can e-commerce provide a solution to the coffee paradox?: The case of Costa Rica(IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology, 2016-09-12) Mata, Francisco; Quesada, Ariella; Mata-Marín, GabrielaIn spite of the boom in coffee consumption worldwide, farmers in coffee-producing countries are subject to increasingly lower prices. This situation is referred to as the “coffee paradox”, and affects the livelihood of millions of coffee farmers and their associated workers. ICT may provide a way to address this problem by eliminating intermediaries in the global value chain for coffee; therefore, we study the effect of e-commerce systems used in Costa Rica for trading coffee on prices received by local actors and discuss whether these systems provide a solution to the coffee paradox. Based on this discussion, we propose a new e-commerce system.Ítem Contributing to the OER movement: A practical experience(IEEE, 2017) Mora Rivera, Sonia; Coto, MayelaOpen educational resources (OER) propose a culture of sharing to make knowledge a good for humanity. The educational field recognizes the potential of OER to expand access to education and the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) provide the context for sharing, using and reusing this knowledge. In addition, the OER movement offers scholars the opportunity to rethink their educational practice. Although the literature has shown that academics in general have the practice of sharing their educational resources with close colleagues, it is also true that open and large-scale exchange through appropriate licensing and institutional repositories is an emergent move in many universities. This paper presents an exploratory study to promote, among academics and students, their participation in the OER movement. The experience allowed to generate knowledge on the subject, to develop and validate a set of educational resources to later create in the institutional repository the first OER community.Ítem CRGOURMETCOFFEE.COM: using E-Commerce to mitigate the coffee paradox in Costa Rica(International Association for Development of the Information Society, 2019) Mata, Francisco; Hernández Ruiz, IreneWe present the background and the design and development considerations for an electronic platform to sell Costa Rican roasted coffee through e-commerce, referred to as crgourmetcoffee.com (https://www.crgourmetcoffee.com). This system is proposed as a solution to mitigate the coffee paradox −phenomenon that makes the coffee prices received by famers in developing countries to be increasingly lower, despite a growing demand for this product. Eje temático: Calidad y Materiales educativos y Herramientas Tecnológicas en Educación a Distancia(Fundación Latinoamericana para la Educación a Distancia, 2008) Vílchez Quesada, Enrique; Ulate Solís, GabyAbstract: Virtual learning in recent years is representing an important educational approach with its own particularities, both in the role of the participating agents and in the learning environment. Virtuality has been incorporated into the scenarios of educational institutions as a response to the demands and needs of the new generations, which require the formation of a series of skills to function in a globalized society in terms of information and the media. . At the National University (UNA) of Costa Rica, these processes of permanent change have led to the consolidation of a Program called "UNA Virtual", whose main objective has been to spread the use and train university teachers in the use of technologies. for training via the Internet. Given these initiatives, a unique experience was carried out with this research project in the Educology Division of the UNA, designing and implementing a degree course called "Teaching Resources for Learning", which due to its curricular characteristics was ideal. to study virtuality in a face-to-face context. In addition to this, the experience has made it possible to give continuity to the process in projection to the year 2008, institutionalizing the course in the nine careers for which it is taught. With this article, the main results obtained in three dimensions are published: the virtuality in presence in the particular context of the Educology Division of the National University of Costa Rica, conjectures of the beliefs of teachers and students regarding the advantages and disadvantages of a virtual educational model and evaluation of the activities, materials and structure of the Didactic Resources for Learning course under a bimodal approach.Ítem Differences between programming languages offered by the academy versus demanded by the companies in Costa Rica: Information Systems Engineering from the Universidad Nacional(Instituto of Electrical and Electronica Engineers (IEEE), 2017) Quesada Rosales, Ariella; Castro, Oscar M.This article presents the results of an investigation that aims to analyze the differences between programming language required by companies in the Costa Rican labor market versus current programming languages offered by the academy. It also shows the main factors to consider new graduates in this specific area of information and communication technologies to be hired. The study finds that there is a consistent relationship between the major programming languages taught at universities and request by companies that corresponds to management Java, C++, C#, Javascript and PHP.Ítem Disciplinary and Generic Abilities in PBL: A Study of Life Stories from the Gender Perspective in Systems Engineering Education(University of Brasilia, 2018) Sandoval-Carvajal, Maria-Marta; Lizano Madriz, Fulvio; Porras Piedra, Elena; Cortés Chavarría, RitaWhile it is true that socio-economic environment plays a determining role in terms of gender and entry into technological careers such as systems engineering, tendency to generate generic and disciplinary competencies from the gender point of view, is also something relevant to analyze specific actions that allow curricular changes in curricula. Recent studies show a reduction in the entry of women into systems engineering careers since several years ago. Some of these studies suggest, among other things, aspects of socio-economic perception to explain this phenomenon. In this research we want to offer a new angle of debate focused on the results of the training process by using PBL case of study in Systems Engineering grade. We were interested in exploring the generation of competencies by gender. The Tuning Latin America project, which was originated in its European counterpart, represented an effort to locate generic and disciplinary competencies of computer science practitioners with the participation of 14 universities in the region. In this study we explore the state of internalization of disciplinary and generic skills in systems engineering students based on their life histories by considering the gender perspective. The main research method used was content analysis of approximately 150 life histories of systems engineering students. Previously, a set of disciplinary and generic skills was defined based on the classification of such skills included in the Tuning Latin America project. Interviews and focus groups sessions were also used in order to validate information. The results indicate several interesting aspects. The main competence identified by men is the disciplinary competence "Apply knowledge of computer science" and for women it was a generic competence called “the teamwork ability”. The results also show evidence that the PBL and management by competencies can help visibility of competencies something that regular Systems Engineering students would not consider, especially in the case of men, who in spite of consider first some disciplinary competences, they tend to put other generic competencies in second place. This aspect, which seems not related to gender stereotypes, could also be other attractive factor to motivate women to enter Systems Engineering education. Finally, this study not only points out the differences, but also the common elements in the teaching-learning process of engineering, such as the balance between both groups of competencies. Both male and female students using the PBL and a competencies approach, show the importance of a balance between technical and generic skills, a situation that guarantees job and social integration for future professionals.Ítem E-commerce and coffee in Costa Rica: Case studies of costa rican roaster companies(Proceedings - 2015 41st Latin American Computing Conference [CLEI], 2015-12-17) Mata, Francisco J.; Quesada, AriellaThis paper presents the results of an exploratory multiple case study about the use of e-commerce for selling roasted coffee from Costa Rica. Four Costa Rican roasting companies are considered. This study is aimed at addressing the questions of why such companies use e-commerce and how they do so. Based on the results obtained, we propose possible key success factors for using e-commerce in this type of companies. Notwithstanding the results of this study cannot be generalized, due to its qualitative nature, the proposed factors can guide similar studies in Costa Rica and other coffee-producing countries. This research contributes to the study of e-commerce in developing countries, in particular in relation to their own products. For this reason, it assists in understanding how information technology can support a greater economic and social development in these countries.Ítem E-marketing in Costa Rican export companies: Results from a field survey(IEEE EXPLORE, 2012-06-25) Mata, Francisco; Quesada, AriellaWe present the results of a field survey aimed at analyzing ICT adoption and use, particularly related to e-marketing, in Costa Rican export companies. The e-commerce readiness/intensity/impact model, developed by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), was adapted for this field survey. The results obtained show that, in general, the surveyed companies present low e-marketing readiness and intensity, with the exception of service companies and microenterprises. Furthermore, there is no evidence of a clear perceived positive ICT impact on the exports taking into account all companies, neither considering their sector or size. Nevertheless, large companies perceive a positive effect, which is consistent with a sustained increase in their export value. Based on the previous results, we discuss factors that might influence the use of e-marketing and present recommendations to increase its use in Costa Rican export companies. This survey is part of a longitudinal study, which conducted a similar survey in 2012; therefore, the results from the present survey are compared with the previous one to determine changes across time.Ítem Gender gap in computer science programs from Costa Rican Public universities: Are Women Really Becoming Extinct?(IEEE EXPLORE, 2012-10-01) Mata, Francisco; Quesada, Ariella; Raventós, Gabriela MarínThere is evidence that women tend to be underrepresented in computer science programs (CS) in many countries. Based on this fact, we analyzed the gender situation in Costa Rica finding that this situation also applies to the four public universities in the country. Furthermore, similar to the case of the U.S., the percentage of women graduating from CS programs from such universities is decreasing. Based on previous studies, we attempt to explain the gender gap in Costa Rican public universities, and present recommendations to reduce itÍtem Human resources in computer sciences in Costa Rica: The elusive gap between supply and demand(International Conference on Information Society, 2017-07-17) Mata, Francisco; Quesada, AriellaWe analyze in this paper the supply and demand of human resources in computer sciences in Costa Rica. This is done with the aim of validating claims made by the local media about a large deficit of professionals for ICT occupations in this country. On the supply side, we find an increase in the number of university graduates in computer sciences, which is greater than the increase in the total number of academic degrees granted. On the demand side, we find that the expected demand-using the available data-does not seem to largely exceed the supply, apparently contradicting the existence of a large deficit. However, limitations in the data obtained, as well as methodological problems for measuring the gap between supply and demand, might be affecting these results. These limitations are discussed and solutions to overcome them are presented.Ítem El impacto de las actividades de extensión universitaria en el área de programación(Universidad Nacional (Costa Rica), 2022) Hernández Ruiz, Irene; Gómez Fernández, CarolinaThis paper presents the results obtained in two university extension activities carried out by the project "Creating programming capacities in young people and teachers in both secondary and higher education" of the School of Computer Science of the National University. Scratch day is described, which is a world event that takes place in the month of May to celebrate IDE day and the event “Costa Rica learns with the public U”, an activity where the State University of Costa Rica participated. -AC. In both events, workshops were held where there was the particularity of having a population of different age ranges and from different provinces of the country, but all with a great desire to acquire knowledge in the area activities have had on the participants is reported, for which their perception was known through the use of a web form.
