Eje temático: Calidad y Materiales educativos y Herramientas Tecnológicas en Educación a Distancia(Fundación Latinoamericana para la Educación a Distancia, 2008) Vílchez Quesada, Enrique; Ulate Solís, GabyAbstract: Virtual learning in recent years is representing an important educational approach with its own particularities, both in the role of the participating agents and in the learning environment. Virtuality has been incorporated into the scenarios of educational institutions as a response to the demands and needs of the new generations, which require the formation of a series of skills to function in a globalized society in terms of information and the media. . At the National University (UNA) of Costa Rica, these processes of permanent change have led to the consolidation of a Program called "UNA Virtual", whose main objective has been to spread the use and train university teachers in the use of technologies. for training via the Internet. Given these initiatives, a unique experience was carried out with this research project in the Educology Division of the UNA, designing and implementing a degree course called "Teaching Resources for Learning", which due to its curricular characteristics was ideal. to study virtuality in a face-to-face context. In addition to this, the experience has made it possible to give continuity to the process in projection to the year 2008, institutionalizing the course in the nine careers for which it is taught. With this article, the main results obtained in three dimensions are published: the virtuality in presence in the particular context of the Educology Division of the National University of Costa Rica, conjectures of the beliefs of teachers and students regarding the advantages and disadvantages of a virtual educational model and evaluation of the activities, materials and structure of the Didactic Resources for Learning course under a bimodal approach.Ítem Time delay performance analysis of sensor allocation strategies on a WSN(ACWR 2011 - Proceedings of the International Conference on Wireless Technologies for Humanitarian Relief, 2011) BAYANI, MAJID; Barrantes, Gabriela; Marín, GabrielaIn many of query-based WSN applications, response time factor is an essential issue. Overall performance under different sensor placements depends on the pattern of queries requested from the network, which in turn might depend on the physical segmentation of the field. This paper explores three predefined configurations in order to compare the time delay performance. The experiments showed that the Uniform distribution of the nodes was the strategy that obtains the fastest response time, and as expected, Random is the one with the slowest.Ítem E-marketing in Costa Rican export companies: Results from a field survey(IEEE EXPLORE, 2012-06-25) Mata, Francisco; Quesada, AriellaWe present the results of a field survey aimed at analyzing ICT adoption and use, particularly related to e-marketing, in Costa Rican export companies. The e-commerce readiness/intensity/impact model, developed by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), was adapted for this field survey. The results obtained show that, in general, the surveyed companies present low e-marketing readiness and intensity, with the exception of service companies and microenterprises. Furthermore, there is no evidence of a clear perceived positive ICT impact on the exports taking into account all companies, neither considering their sector or size. Nevertheless, large companies perceive a positive effect, which is consistent with a sustained increase in their export value. Based on the previous results, we discuss factors that might influence the use of e-marketing and present recommendations to increase its use in Costa Rican export companies. In addition, suggestions for further research are included.Ítem Gender gap in computer science programs from Costa Rican Public universities: Are Women Really Becoming Extinct?(IEEE EXPLORE, 2012-10-01) Mata, Francisco; Quesada, Ariella; Raventós, Gabriela MarínThere is evidence that women tend to be underrepresented in computer science programs (CS) in many countries. Based on this fact, we analyzed the gender situation in Costa Rica finding that this situation also applies to the four public universities in the country. Furthermore, similar to the case of the U.S., the percentage of women graduating from CS programs from such universities is decreasing. Based on previous studies, we attempt to explain the gender gap in Costa Rican public universities, and present recommendations to reduce itÍtem The relationship between information and communication technology and productivity in Costa Rican companies(IEEE Explore, 2012-10-01) Mata, Francisco; Quesada, Ariella; Ruiz, Keynor; Orozco, JeffreyThis paper presents the results of a research aimed at studying the effect of information and communications technology (ICT) on productivity, using the data of the Costa Rican innovation survey 2008. The results obtained show that the ICT variables considered contribute to explain the productivity of the companies participating in the above-mentioned survey. However, these variables have an indirect, yet not direct, contribution to the productivity. This might be explained to limitations in the data used.Ítem Integrated curriculum based on projects: Opportunities and constraints a case study in systems engineering(39th Latin American Computing Conference, CLEI 2013, 2013) Mora, Sonia; Coto, MayelaThe Universidad Nacional is making significant efforts to improve the professional performance of graduates according to the needs of the society and the industry. In particular, the School of Informatics has been exploring the opportunities to implement, through the use of a pedagogy oriented to problems and projects, a curricular integration between diverse areas of knowledge in the curriculum. From this perspective, an initial exploratory study was carried out, with the aim of integrating the areas of programming, databases and systems engineering. The findings show several limitations, such as mismatches between the course contents, lack of faculty commitment to collaborative work and student resistance. They also show the need of establishing strategies to create, from the early years of the curriculum, the necessary conditions to promote a positive attitude towards curricular integration processes and therefore overcome, at least partially, the identified limitations.Ítem Usage and limitations of free and open-source software in Costa Rican local governments(IEEE Explore, 2013-10-07) Mata, Francisco; Quesada, AriellaThis paper presents results about the use and barriers that face free and open source software in the local governments in Costa Rica. Through an electronic survey, information was gathered from such governments, allowing to make a diagnostic of the situation.Ítem Innovation management in software: Case studies from the Costa Rican software development industry(IEEE EXPLORE, 2013-10-07) Mata, FranciscoWe study in this work innovation in several Costa Rican software development companies, in order to associate to each of them a model of innovation management, according to the literature. This is done with the purpose of finding differences in innovation practices in such companies, and relate them with the type of innovations obtained in these companies.Ítem A proposal for implementing PBL in programming courses(XL Latin American Computing Conference, CLEI 2014, 2014) Mora, Sonia; Coto, Mayela; Alfaro Salazar, GeorgesIn the search of teaching strategies more consistent with the current needs of the industry and with the new university pedagogical model, an action research project was carried in the programming courses of the study program of Systems Engineering at the Universidad Nacional of Costa Rica (UNA). The project gradually introduced the principles of autonomy, collaborative learning and shared assessment. This paper reports the experience gained during the three years of the project in terms of a specific proposal for implementing the three principles in the area of programming. Among other, it is necessary to consider students' perspective on the impact of educational innovation in their formation. This becomes even more critical if educational innovation efforts include the use of a model like the Problem Based Learning. This paper presents the results of a survey study made in a context where problems take form of software development projects, made by systems engineering students in real contexts. The study aims to measure the impact of the implementation of the PBL model in the formative process of system engineering students. The study was conducted by considering regular students of the National University (UNA) in Costa Rica. Data collection was face to face with the students and measured various aspects of the students’ perspective on the educational model. Results suggest a high motivation and a positive effect on students. Their willingness to learn, apply knowledge and develop their skills in developing real software engineering projects, was identified as relevant results of the educative process. Student's satisfaction is evidenced by the achievement obtained to complete the project and implement the software. The assessment of the skills varied throughout the educative process. However, aspects as the project management, leadership, and team work maintain a high valuation and are fundamental pillars for the implementation of the development methodology used during courses.Ítem PBL en carreras de Ingeniería de Sistemas: una perspectiva Bottom - Up(Aalborg University Press, 2015) Sandoval-Carvajal, Maria-Marta; Cortés Chavarría, Rita; Lizano Madriz, FulvioLa academia enfrenta cada día más retos relacionados con el desarrollo de competencias de los estudiantes. Lobotes pacíficus demuestra tener gran potencial de crecimiento en sistemas de cultivo, pero se debe profundizar en la elaboración de un pienso balanceado que sea especie especifico.Ítem E-commerce and coffee in Costa Rica: Case studies of costa rican roaster companies(Proceedings - 2015 41st Latin American Computing Conference [CLEI], 2015-12-17) Mata, Francisco J.; Quesada, AriellaThis paper presents the results of an exploratory multiple case study about the use of e-commerce for selling roasted coffee from Costa Rica. Four Costa Rican roasting companies are considered. This study is aimed at addressing the questions of why such companies use e-commerce and how they do so. Based on the results obtained, we propose possible key success factors for using e-commerce in this type of companies. Notwithstanding the results of this study cannot be generalized, due to its qualitative nature, the proposed factors can guide similar studies in Costa Rica and other coffee-producing countries. This research contributes to the study of e-commerce in developing countries, in particular in relation to their own products. For this reason, it assists in understanding how information technology can support a greater economic and social development in these countries.Ítem Can e-commerce provide a solution to the coffee paradox?: The case of Costa Rica(IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology, 2016-09-12) Mata, Francisco; Quesada, Ariella; Mata-Marín, GabrielaIn spite of the boom in coffee consumption worldwide, farmers in coffee-producing countries are subject to increasingly lower prices. This situation is referred to as the “coffee paradox”, and affects the livelihood of millions of coffee farmers and their associated workers. ICT may provide a way to address this problem by eliminating intermediaries in the global value chain for coffee; therefore, we study the effect of e-commerce systems used in Costa Rica for trading coffee on prices received by local actors and discuss whether these systems provide a solution to the coffee paradox. Based on this discussion, we propose a new e-commerce system.Ítem Curso virtual sobre la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de las funciones ofrecido por la actividad académica Matemática para la Enseñanza Media, Universidad Nacional(Universidad Nacional (Costa Rica), 2017) Alfaro Arce, Ana Lucía; Alpízar Vargas, Marianela; Morales-López, YuriDurante 2016 la actividad académica Matemática para la Enseñanza Media (MATEM) realizó un curso de actualización para los docentes participantes en dicha actividad, con la modalidad de curso virtual. The educational field recognizes the potential of OER to expand access to education and the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) provide the context for sharing, using and reusing this knowledge. In addition, the OER movement offers scholars the opportunity to rethink their educational practice. Although the literature has shown that academics in general have the practice of sharing their educational resources with close colleagues, it is also true that open and large-scale exchange through appropriate licensing and institutional repositories is an emergent move in many universities. This paper presents an exploratory study to promote, among academics and students, their participation in the OER movement.
