Ítem Curso: Recursos didácticos para el aprendizaje una experiencia en la virtualidad. Eje temático: Calidad y Materiales educativos y Herramientas Tecnológicas en Educación a Distancia(Fundación Latinoamericana para la Educación a Distancia, 2008) Vílchez Quesada, Enrique; Ulate Solís, GabyAbstract: Virtual learning in recent years is representing an important educational approach with its own particularities, both in the role of the participating agents and in the learning environment. Virtuality has been incorporated into the scenarios of educational institutions as a response to the demands and needs of the new generations, which require the formation of a series of skills to function in a globalized society in terms of information and the media. . At the National University (UNA) of Costa Rica, these processes of permanent change have led to the consolidation of a Program called "UNA Virtual", whose main objective has been to spread the use and train university teachers in the use of technologies. for training via the Internet. Given these initiatives, a unique experience was carried out with this research project in the Educology Division of the UNA, designing and implementing a degree course called "Teaching Resources for Learning", which due to its curricular characteristics was ideal. to study virtuality in a face-to-face context. In addition to this, the experience has made it possible to give continuity to the process in projection to the year 2008, institutionalizing the course in the nine careers for which it is taught. With this article, the main results obtained in three dimensions are published: the virtuality in presence in the particular context of the Educology Division of the National University of Costa Rica, conjectures of the beliefs of teachers and students regarding the advantages and disadvantages of a virtual educational model and evaluation of the activities, materials and structure of the Didactic Resources for Learning course under a bimodal approach.Ítem Time delay performance analysis of sensor allocation strategies on a WSN(ACWR 2011 - Proceedings of the International Conference on Wireless Technologies for Humanitarian Relief, 2011) BAYANI, MAJID; Barrantes, Gabriela; Marín, GabrielaIn many of query-based WSN applications, response time factor is an essential issue. Overall performance under different sensor placements depends on the pattern of queries requested from the network, which in turn might depend on the physical segmentation of the field. This paper explores three predefined configurations in order to compare the time delay performance. The experiments showed that the Uniform distribution of the nodes was the strategy that obtains the fastest response time, and as expected, Random is the one with the slowest.Ítem Applying a Distributed CSCL Activity for Teaching Software Architecture(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) (Estados Unidos), 2011) Giraldo, Faber D.; Herrera, Myriam; Neyem, Andres; Arciniegas, Jose Luis; Ochoa, Sergio F.; Clunie, Clifton; Zapata, Sergio; Lizano Madriz, FulvioAbstract. Teaching and learning software engineering have been recognized as important challenges for computer science students and instructors. These challenges become stronger if we consider the distributed software development scenario that is gaining space everyday into the software industry. In order to help address this challenge, this article introduces a Collaborative and Distributed Learning Activity (CODILA). This collaborative activity helps students to reach the professional skills required in the professional work, and instructors to perform such transfer process. The paper also presents and discusses the obtained results from a particular CODILA, which address the challenge of designing a software architecture of a communication infrastructure in a distributed way. Six Latin American universities participated in the activity. The obtained results were satisfactory and indicate these types of experiences can be used to address the stated challenges.Ítem Influence of Simulation and Real Implementation Skills on the Cognitive Learning Aspects(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) (Estados Unidos), 2012) Bayani, MajidAbstract. In this paper we show how to represent a set of logic propositions as an integer linear program and how to use its solution to determine the truth value of all the proposition given only a subset of their truth values. Thus a rule–based expert system might use this approach as inference engine. When we model an expert system knowledge base as an integer linear program, we can ask for what is a minimum set of premises needed in order to have an specific conclusion as true. Furthermore we can ask for what propositions become true once a subset of propositions are known to be true. Once the integer restriction is dismissed, we can ask for what conditions are necessary in order that a conclusion holds with certain probability. Thus we can have both a deterministic and stochastic model using practically the same paradigm.Ítem E-marketing in Costa Rican export companies: Results from a field survey(IEEE EXPLORE, 2012-06-25) Mata, Francisco; Quesada, AriellaWe present the results of a field survey aimed at analyzing ICT adoption and use, particularly related to e-marketing, in Costa Rican export companies. The e-commerce readiness/intensity/impact model, developed by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), was adapted for this field survey. The results obtained show that, in general, the surveyed companies present low e-marketing readiness and intensity, with the exception of service companies and microenterprises. Furthermore, there is no evidence of a clear perceived positive ICT impact on the exports taking into account all companies, neither considering their sector or size. Nevertheless, large companies perceive a positive effect, which is consistent with a sustained increase in their export value. Based on the previous results, we discuss factors that might influence the use of e-marketing and present recommendations to increase its use in Costa Rican export companies. In addition, suggestions for further research are included.Ítem Gender gap in computer science programs from Costa Rican Public universities: Are Women Really Becoming Extinct?(IEEE EXPLORE, 2012-10-01) Mata, Francisco; Quesada, Ariella; Raventós, Gabriela MarínThere is evidence that women tend to be underrepresented in computer science programs (CS) in many countries. Based on this fact, we analyzed the gender situation in Costa Rica finding that this situation also applies to the four public universities in the country. Furthermore, similar to the case of the U.S., the percentage of women graduating from CS programs from such universities is decreasing. Based on previous studies, we attempt to explain the gender gap in Costa Rican public universities, and present recommendations to reduce itÍtem The relationship between information and communication technology and productivity in Costa Rican companies(IEEE Explore, 2012-10-01) Mata, Francisco; Quesada, Ariella; Ruiz, Keynor; Orozco, JeffreyThis paper presents the results of a research aimed at studying the effect of information and communications technology (ICT) on productivity, using the data of the Costa Rican innovation survey 2008. The results obtained show that the ICT variables considered contribute to explain the productivity of the companies participating in the above-mentioned survey. However, these variables have an indirect, yet not direct, contribution to the productivity. This might be explained to limitations in the data used.Ítem Integrated curriculum based on projects: Opportunities and constraints a case study in systems engineering(39th Latin American Computing Conference, CLEI 2013, 2013) Mora, Sonia; Coto, MayelaThe Universidad Nacional is making significant efforts to improve the professional performance of graduates according to the needs of the society and the industry. In particular, the School of Informatics has been exploring the opportunities to implement, through the use of a pedagogy oriented to problems and projects, a curricular integration between diverse areas of knowledge in the curriculum. From this perspective, an initial exploratory study was carried out, with the aim of integrating the areas of programming, databases and systems engineering. The findings show several limitations, such as mismatches between the course contents, lack of faculty commitment to collaborative work and student resistance. They also show the need of establishing strategies to create, from the early years of the curriculum, the necessary conditions to promote a positive attitude towards curricular integration processes and therefore overcome, at least partially, the identified limitations.Ítem Single-Sink Mobility Performance Analysis on a Wireless Sensor Networks(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) (Estados Unidos), 2013) Bayani, Majid; López Ordóñez, Luis MiguelAbstract. The positioning of the sensors in the query-based Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) has an impact on its energy Efficiency. This work, presents two pre-defined sensor arrangements in order to measure the magnitude of this impact, concerning energy consumption, successful queries and round-trip time delay in each query on a single-sink WSN. Predefined positions developed for querying entity (singlesink) against variable event locations in a flat, and obstacle free rectangular field. The simulation results confirm that positioning strategy of the single sink node offers a significant Energy consumption performance gain with different response time.Ítem Web-Based Decision Support Systems: A Conceptual Performance Evaluation(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) (Estados Unidos), 2013) Bayani, MajidAbstract. Among other, it is necessary to consider students' perspective on the impact of educational innovation in their formation. This becomes even more critical if educational innovation efforts include the use of a model like the Problem Based Learning. This paper presents the results of a survey study made in a context where problems take form of software development projects, made by systems engineering students in real contexts. The study aims to measure the impact of the implementation of the PBL model in the formative process of system engineering students. The study was conducted by considering regular students of the National University (UNA) in Costa Rica. Data collection was face to face with the students and measured various aspects of the students’ perspective on the educational model. Results suggest a high motivation and a positive effect on students. Their willingness to learn, apply knowledge and develop their skills in developing real software engineering projects, was identified as relevant results of the educative process. Student's satisfaction is evidenced by the achievement obtained to complete the project and implement the software. The assessment of the skills varied throughout the educative process. However, aspects as the project management, leadership, and team work maintain a high valuation and are fundamental pillars for the implementation of the development methodology used during courses.
