Self-management of learning is studied through empirical educational research on personal learning environments (PLEs). The research analyzed was obtained from important documentary sources (articles in indexed journals, conference proceedings, books, and reports). Content analysis of the papers led to the generation of three categories: teachers' self-management of learning and their ICT competencies; the relationship between digital and information skills and self-management of learning; and the role of self-management of learning in "learning to learn." These are interesting and emerging fields of research and undoubtedly constitute trends for future research.
