It was in 1982 that the National University organized the region’s first poetry contest, thereby formalizing this event as an outcome of the emerging local literary movement. The short story genre was later added to encourage broader participation. In recent years, a significant change was made to encourage literary creation among young people. This year, the competition is divided into two categories—one for poetry and one for short stories—so that a prize is awarded for the best work in the region and another at the national level. In 2020, the winner of first place in the regional poetry category was the poetry collection “Memoria del hígado” by poet Leonardo Issac Porras Cabrera. An honorable mention was awarded to the poetry collection “Alicia internada en el país de las jeringas” by poet Joselyn López Rojas. In the national poetry category, first place went to the poetry collection “Álbum” by poet Bryan Sánchez Rivera; first honorable mention went to the poetry collection “Los incómodos azules” by poet Gabriel Ulloa Herrera; and second honorable mention went to the poetry collection “Escalones” by poet Alejandra Valverde Alfaro. In the regional short story category, first place was awarded to writer Cristhofer Valdeir Marín Zúñiga for the work titled “Lo singular, lo extraño y lo tenebroso: relatos de terror”; first honorable mention went to writer Jostin Andrey Mena Fernández for the work “Cuentos diversos”; second honorable mention went to writer William Ronaldo Hernández Díaz for the work “Vida, rodillas y muerte.” In the national short story category, first place was awarded to writer Gabriel Ulloa Herrera for the work “Selection of Graffilian Narrative from the Late 2010s”; an honorable mention was awarded to writer Cristopher Reyes Loaiciga for the work “Eternal Memory at Sea”; and a second honorable mention was awarded to writer Alexa Ajoy Jiménez for the work “Tales of Birds and Green Souls.”
