Abstract
This topic focuses on the essay that Cuban writer José Martí dedicated to the figure of Bartolomé de las Casas, a defender of the rights of indigenous peoples during the Spanish conquest of America. Martí highlights the humanitarian and libertarian work of Las Casas, whom he considers a model to follow. He also analyzes how Esquivel's novel deconstructs the predominantly male cultural paradigms and reconstructs a world from a female perspective; the work vindicates the tasks “traditionally” assigned to women, such as cooking, caring and loving. In addition, the recipes function as intermediaries of a deeper message, intertwining the lives of the protagonists.
