In 1996, the School of Bibliotecology, Documentation and Information of the National University inaugurated its Miriam Álvarez Brenes Children’s Library (Bimab). Over two decades later, in 2018, this information unit underwent three fundamental changes. First, it transitioned from being a project to become an academic activity. Second, it incorporated the itinerant modality to offer its services beyond its location in the Campus Omar Dengo. Finally, it expanded his work team from one to three people. A group of assistant students joined the team; they had already been collaborating with this library’s work. To make the itinerant modality a reality and bring the Bimab services to its target population, the need to articulate a human team that would take up the challenge of working together in the search and consolidation of this purpose soon emerged. Thus, with the firm assurance that the willingness to learn and work collaboratively of the human team of this library had to be built, in the first months of 2019, the two academic officials of this library implemented a self-assessment exercise based on participation, dialog, and respectful exchange of views among academic and administrative staff and student assistants of the Bimab. Using the SWOT tool, the internal analysis process generated annotations and ideas that have served as input to continue promoting collaborative learning and workspaces. Besides, the analysis of the information collected will gradually foster the construction or strengthening of strategies that promote synergies toward this type of learning and work. More broadly, it will contribute to elaborating on a strategic plan to be constituted in the first guiding document of this children’s library. In this way, the present paper refers to the steps the Bimab team took to build this self-assessment.
