This essay examines the use of “dolorismo” in political narratives, specifically during the Carlos Alvarado administration in Costa Rica (2018-2022). It argues that narratives of suffering, presented as necessary for a better future, justified the implementation of regressive policies, such as Law 9635 on Strengthening Public Finances, which disproportionately affected the most vulnerable classes. The theological vision present in Martin Luther's theology of the cross, analyzed by Vítor Westhelle, in his book: The Scandalous God: “Uses and Abuses of the Cross Jonathan Pimentel, ed. Diego Soto, Heredia: Unpublished, 2024, has been the main document used to undertake the present work, with emphasis on the dolorismo that, as a theological category, will allow the analysis of the political narratives of the government cited. It proposes that social suffering is manipulated through political narratives, which maintain unjust power structures. The cross, however, should be a symbol of resistance and social transformation, offering a critical framework to question and eradicate policies that maintain inequality. In this sense, the analysis is recovered using the theological method, as well as the processes of liberation theology for today's circumstances.
