This work corresponds to the Translation Memory module of the Professional Master's Degree in English-Spanish Translation at the National University, Heredia, Costa Rica. The object of study is the English translation of Larissa Rú's novel Cómo sobrevivir a una tormenta extranjera (How to Survive a Foreign Storm). The corpus of analysis includes the first five chapters, from which idiomatic expressions and rhetorical figures were extracted. The overall objective is to convey the emotional atmosphere, idiomatic richness, and cultural specificity of the novel into English, preserving its emotional charge and naturalness, as well as promoting sensitivity to cultural differences. The specific objectives focused on analyzing the strategies applied to translate the rhetorical figures and examining the cultural considerations that affect the authenticity of the work. The theoretical framework articulates dynamic equivalence (Nida, 1964), the concepts of domestication and foreignization (Venuti, 1995), and the functionalist perspective (Nord, 1991). The methodology combines a qualitative case study with quantitative descriptive recording, applying the typology of techniques developed by Molina and Hurtado Albir (2002) and validation by the author and professional reviewers. The results indicate that high-visibility strategies were reserved for identity references, while modulations and coined equivalents favored reading fluency. It is concluded that, guided by skopos, a flexible balance between cultural fidelity and linguistic accessibility allows the novel to be projected to an English-speaking audience without losing its identity.
