El lenguaje juvenil como enganche para incentivar la lectura en los adolescentes costarricenses: la traducción de recursos que evocan el lenguaje juvenil en The Earth, My Butt and Other Big Round Things de Carolyn Mackler

Abstract

En este trabajo de investigación se tradujo y analizó la novela The Earth, My Butt and Other Big Round Things1

de Carolyn Mackler, desde la perspectiva de incentivar a los adolescentes costarricenses a leer. El análisis se hizo con base en la teoría del skopos de Reiss y Vermeer (1984), la variación lingüística de M.A.K. Halliday (1978) y los estudios sobre el lenguaje juvenil de Félix Rodríguez, Manuel Casado y Gemma Herrero (2002). Como parte del proceso de análisis se delimitaron los recursos del lenguaje juvenil presentes tanto en el texto original como en el traducido, se analizó su frecuencia y se los dividió en nueve categorías: metáforas, adjetivos y adverbios, lenguaje informal, juegos de palabras, enunciados incompletos, acortamientos léxicos, interjecciones y vocativos, a los cuales se agregaron los símiles en la traducción. Al analizar y comparar los elementos en ambos textos se llegó a la conclusión de que hay un aumento en los recursos que evocan el lenguaje juvenil en el texto traducido, lo que indica que se hace un esfuerzo para recrear este tipo de lenguaje aún más en la traducción. Así, se cumple con el skopos establecido en un inicio para la traducción.

by Carolyn Mackler. Its purpose is to promote reading among Costa Rican teenagers. The analysis is based on the Skopos Theory by Katherina Reiss and Hans Vermeer (1984,) M.A.K. Halliday’s studies on linguistic variation (1978,) and the studies on youth language by Félix Rodríguez, Manuel Casado y Gemma Herrero (2002.) In the analysis, the linguistic resources of youth language in both texts were delimited, analyzed by their frequency and divided into nine categories, which are metaphors, adjectives and adverbs (which changed to ―similes‖ in the translation,) informal language, puns, incomplete statements, abbreviation of words, interjections and vocatives. After analyzing and comparing the linguistic resources in the texts, the results showed an increase of the elements that simulate youth language in the translation, which means that the translator tries to reproduce this type of language as much as possible. In this way, the translation fulfills the purpose or skopos set at the beginning.
