In the film, Viridiana is a beautiful and kind nun whom the mother superior sends to see her sick uncle. This is the widower of Viridiana's aunt. The nun tells the mother superior that she "would rather not leave the convent", because she does not want to leave the right path. According to the culture, women can stay within the maternal cloister, protector of their virtue, or leave and become prostitutes.
