In this investigation, 202 samples of respiratory system were examinated obtained as part of the rutinary diagnoses procedures at the Pathology Laboratory of the Veterinary Medicine School (Universidad Nacional, Costa Rica) from 1999 to 2004. Histopathological studies of different sections of respiratory tissues were done searching for lesions consistent with avian infectious laryngotracheitis (LTI). This investigation also includes a retrospective analysis of the respiratory system pathologies, affecting Costa Rican birds during the years 1999 to 2004 and that were determined by histopathology and in some cases by the use of additional techniques. Eleven of these samples, was send to the University of Urburn, Alabama, and a polimerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed, with the objective to determined the existence of the virus. From these tests, 100% of the samples was positive. As a result of this analysis, it was found, that this illnes is in the country since 1999, 23% of the total respiratory cases are related to LTI, 62% was morphological diagnosis, and 37% etiological diagnosis
