Thinking about old age is not very common or very rewarding for many people, especially for those who consider themselves still very young and forget that there is still a stage of life to live. But thinking about old age means preparing to enjoy this stage of life. And one of the ways to prepare is to start by learning how to improve the lifestyles we lead. Demographic trends in Costa Rica reveal long life expectancies. For example, the proportion of elderly people has been growing: while in 1950 the percentage of people aged 60 and over was 5.7%, which was equivalent to approximately 50 thousand people in that age group, in 1980 the proportion of people in that condition was already 130 thousand, in absolute numbers. From 1995 onwards, it increased to 253,000 people and in 1997 it reached 282,000 people (Morales Martínez, 2000: 2).
