This paper brings together the experiences of a research project carried out with incarcerated university students at the Liberia Penal Center, in support of the Mathematics for Administrators II course at the State Distance University (UNED). The problems faced are: lack of teaching resources, inadequate infrastructure, and lack of tutoring to enable meaningful learning. The commitment was to provide support to the students in the course through a participatory and humanistic methodology focused on the use of study techniques for the acquisition of mathematical knowledge. From a humanistic perspective, the learning possibilities of a student in the prison were evaluated in relation to students who regularly attend university.
