Pasantía en medicina y cirugía de pequeños animales en el Hospital Clínico Veterinario de la Universidad de Extremadura (HCV-UEX), España

Resumen
Se realizó una pasantía en el Hospital Clínico Veterinario de la Universidad de Extremadura, Cádiz, España, durante tres meses (del 1° de septiembre al 30 de noviembre de 2024). Durante este periodo, se participó en un total de 660 casos, de los cuales, casi tres cuartas partes (69.24%) fueron de medicina interna, representando 457 pacientes, 147 (22.27%) fueron del área de cirugía y anestesia y 56 (8.48%) en cuidado crítico. Las principales patologías observadas en cada una de las áreas fueron: en medicina interna, oncología con un total de 125 casos (27.35%), cirugía y anestesia, traumatología con 47 casos (31.97%) y cuidado crítico, traumatología 24 (42.85%). Este trabajo describe los casos vistos, su incidencia, las técnicas diagnósticas utilizadas y los tratamientos establecidos. Se destaca las principales enseñanzas que se obtuvieron durante la realización de esta pasantía. Se concluye de esta pasantía todas las destrezas adquiridas, necesarias para el trabajo del día a día del médico veterinario dedicado a la clínica de pequeños animales, la importancia del razonamiento clínica para poder decidir entre las diversas técnicas diagnósticas existentes y la importancia de las habilidades blandas y capacidades comunicativas en el médico.
An internship was carried out at the Veterinary Clinical Hospital of the University of Extremadura, Cádiz, Spain, over a period of three months (from September 1 to November 30, 2024). During this time, participation involved a total of 660 cases, of which nearly three-quarters (69.24%) were in internal medicine, accounting for 457 patients. A total of 147 cases (22.27%) were in surgery and anesthesia, while 56 cases (8.48%) were in critical care. The main pathologies observed in each area were as follows: in internal medicine, oncology accounted for 125 cases (27.35%); in surgery and anesthesia, traumatology represented 47 cases (31.97%); and in critical care, traumatology totaled 24 cases (42.85%). This report describes the cases attended, their incidence, the diagnostic techniques used, and the treatments established. It highlights the key lessons learned during the internship. The internship concluded with the acquisition of essential skills necessary for the day-to-day work of a veterinarian specializing in small animal clinical practice. It emphasized the importance of clinical reasoning to decide between various diagnostic techniques, as well as the significance of soft skills and communication abilities in veterinary practice.
