This study uses the translation into Spanish of North American playwright Edward Albee’s Seascape1 , as turning point to analyze the adaptation of dramaturgical strategies present in this play with the objective of establishing the necessary steps to translate dramatic texts with emphasis in the theater of the absurd; being that Seascape is considered an example of plays associated with the movement. This qualitative and comparative study seeks to collate the decisions taken previously during the translation, based on the analysis of the play and the comparison with other plays belonging to the same subgenre, as well as translation theory of other literary texts, dramatic texts and the characteristics of the theater of the absurd. Afterwards, the translation is checked one more time to make pertinent changes and in this way, a translation process is established, specifically for this subgenre, always taking into consideration the intention and function of the text and the target audience. Due to its innovative approach, in which the actor’s experience in this specific play, is integrated with traductological knowledge, this study is one of the first efforts to systematize the experience of translating a play belonging to the theater of the absurd.
