| dc.description.abstract | Various researchers have argued that mathematics is a language used to represent aspects of the world around us. However, mathematical notation, which could be considered a kind of "translation" of everyday language, has not received sufficient attention from educators. Different representations offer different perspectives on a more complex concept or relationship, and therefore students need a variety of representations to reinforce their understanding of a particular topic. It can be said that a student understands an idea if they are able to recognize it in different representational systems, manipulate this idea within a given system, and translate the idea from one system to another. To validate these claims, this paper presents the results of interviews with four students to determine their translation skills between different representational systems used in mathematics. | |
