Resumen
Diferentes investigadores han sostenido que la matemática es un lenguaje que sirve para representar aspectos del mundo que nos rodea. Sin embargo, la notación matemática, que podría considerarse una especie de “traducción” del lenguaje cotidiano, no ha tenido suficiente atención de parte de los educadores. Las diferentes representaciones ofrecen diferentes aspectos de un concepto o relación más complejos y por eso los estudiantes necesitan una variedad de representaciones que refuercen su comprensión sobre un tópico en particular. Se puede afirmar que un estudiante entiende una idea si es capaz de reconocerla en diferentes sistemas de representación, puede manipular esta idea dentro de un sistema de representación dado y puede traducir la idea de un sistema a otro. Para validar las afirmaciones hechas, en este documento se presentan los resultados de entrevistar a cuatro estudiantes, con el fin de determinar sus habilidades en la traducción entre diferentes sistemas de representación usados en matemática.
Various researchers have argued that mathematics is a language used to represent aspects of the world around us. However, mathematical notation, which could be considered a kind of "translation" of everyday language, has not received sufficient attention from educators. Different representations offer different perspectives on a more complex concept or relationship, and therefore students need a variety of representations to reinforce their understanding of a particular topic. It can be said that a student understands an idea if they are able to recognize it in different representational systems, manipulate this idea within a given system, and translate the idea from one system to another. To validate these claims, this paper presents the results of interviews with four students to determine their translation skills between different representational systems used in mathematics.
