The Editorial Board of the Universidad Nacional is pleased to present the Collection of the Bicentennial of the Independence of Central America, an academic contribution from Costa Rica, which allows us to reflect on the current state of literature, art and humanities, history, economics, identity and international relations, with an eye on the regional horizon. The Central American region, after two hundred years of independent life, continues to face historical challenges that affect its future prospects. A complex panorama persists where shadows coexist with hope. Thinking of ourselves as independent leads us to question our identity, our relationship with the world, the way we have structured our economic dynamics and how this affects the social, artistic and cultural landscape. The regional unity project remains unfinished, while important endogenous and exogenous pressures challenge its stability. In the endogenous sphere, countries face challenges to the fulfillment of human rights, human development and sustainability, democracies remain fragile and civil society experiences the consequences of systems based on exclusion. Meanwhile, exogenously, the region has always been conditioned to the evolution of the global powers, their strategic imperatives and their struggle for leadership, which is expressed through globalized agendas of security, technological, commercial and cultural insertion. The Bicentennial Collection of the Independence of Central America is an opportunity to revisit old discussions with new perspectives, offer an overview of the future and build from the foundations that define us as a public university: humanism, democracy, freedom, human rights, gender equality and culture. The works have been led by academics with consolidated careers and extensive merit and recognition, which enhances the contributions, in turn, the Collection reflects the ties that unite us with sister publishers, both nationally and internationally, through collaborative projects that reflect the spirit of solidarity and hope in the face of the new century.
