It analyzes the transversal mechanisms that link socio-cultural processes and the discourse of grief, in a process of reconfiguration of death in Central America at the end of the 19th century, through a proposed reading of funeral wreaths. This research examines the emotions related to grief and disseminated in the written culture through specific discursive manifestations. The funeral epictic discourse is chosen. The study of funeral discourse is complemented by the examination of the epictic genre, a canonical expression of classical rhetoric. This expression is of interest to this study because one of its writing conditions is to approach the context of the deceased, so the proximity to the context is greater than that of purely literary genres, and this circumstance benefits the research. It establishes the correspondences between the processes of modernization and its ideal of progress and the Central American funeral discourse of the late nineteenth century. It examines the articulations between capitalism, positive valuation of individualism, subjective experience and the Central American funeral discourse of the end of the 19th century. Explains the sociocultural functions of the funeral wreath, understood as a secular hagiography of the notable man, in the establishment of nation-state models in fin-de-siecle Central America.
