This study analyzes the province of Heredia and its ten cantons, as well as their division into two distinct groups: The central region of Heredia is closely linked to the province of San José in terms of geography, climate, and socioeconomic conditions. Thus, there is an increasing decline in agricultural activities and a development of the secondary and tertiary sectors, leading to environmental degradation and rising poverty. Sarapiquí accounts for 82% of the Province of Heredia and is the canton with the highest concentration of poverty. Its population growth has been affected by the establishment of the Standard Fruit Co., land invasions, and banana plantation expansion. Notable issues include rising infant mortality rates, teenage pregnancies, infertility due to the banana company’s use of agrochemicals, deforestation, and disruption of the ecological balance.
