Resumen
La escritura de este manual se inició como parte de un libro que prepara la Cátedra de Cirugía de Especies
Mayores, Escuela de Medicina Veterinaria, Universidad Nacional, Costa Rica, pero por el surgimiento de la
pandemia del Covid19 tuvimos que pasar los cursos de la carrera a formato virtual y debido a la urgencia surgió
la necesidad de cubrir algunos tópicos en forma de manual, el cual es más rápido para editar.
Debido a la falta de experiencia existente en muchos estudiantes respecto al manejo de los animales domésticos
de Especies Mayores se decidió hacer esta publicación, incluyendo una serie de consejos prácticos qué
pretenden no solo mejorar las técnicas de sujeción, derribo e incorporación del paciente sino también evitar
accidentes para todas las partes involucradas.
Aunque la obra está dirigida principalmente a nuestros estudiantes de Medicina Veterinaria (para uso en los
cursos de Zootecnia, Etología, Propedéutica Médica, Propedéutica Quirúrgica, Medicina Interna, Imágenes
Médicas, Anestesia, Cirugía de Especies Mayores e Internado Rotatorio) y Médicos Veterinarios en general,
esperamos que también sea útil para profesionales de otras carreras (Ej. Escuelas de Zootecnia, Tecnológicos,
Colegios Agropecuarios) y propietarios que deben manipular individuos de las especies aquí tratadas, explicando
cómo hacer todas las técnicas de manejo descritas bajo los más altos estándares de seguridad para las
partes involucradas y prevención del maltrato animal.
Con el ánimo de entender las posibles reacciones de los pacientes mencionados aquí , se citan en el texto algunos
principios básicos de Etología aplicables a estas especies.
El manual fue escrito con énfasis en Equinos, pero incluye también técnicas, consejos y protocolos para manejo,
sujeción, sedación y/o principios de anestesia general intravenosa bajo condiciones de campo, en pacientes
de otras Especies Mayores comprendidas en la obra.
Este no es un texto de anestesia veterinaria y para ampliar el tema se refiere el lector a publicaciones
especializadas, incluyendo anestesia inhalatoria & monitoreo.
