Resumen
Costa Rica es reconocido por ser un país de pequeño territorio, pero donde existe una importante riqueza de especies. Por su parte, isla Caballo se encuentra dentro del Área de Importancia para las Aves (IBA, por sus siglas en inglés) del Golfo de Nicoya. Esto significa que es una zona considerada de trascendencia para el estudio y la conservación de las aves. En total, para Costa Rica se registran 923 especies de aves, de las cuales 75 se han observado en isla Caballo. Conocer esta riqueza biológica puede representar un estímulo para que las comunidades fortalezcan la relación y el aprendizaje de su entorno natural. Ello puede generar que se asuman iniciativas de conservación con una participación activa. Además, esta guía pretende ser un espacio de diálogo de saberes, en el cual, además del conocimiento biológico, se incorporan los saberes locales de la comunidad. Los saberes son las experiencias sobre los conocimientos y la cultura, en relación con su entorno natural. Son transmitidos desde el territorio de la isla durante su vida y espacio cotidiano. La riqueza biológica y cultural recopilada en esta guía se integra para visibilizar el enriquecimiento biocultural de la comunidad de isla Caballo. Esto significa que acá se registra la descripción, interpretación e identificación colectiva de la naturaleza, es decir, el conocimiento y uso tanto de la naturaleza como de su biodiversidad, igual que su representación simbólica. Lo anterior, a través de los nombres que se les asignan a las aves, mediante la observación e interpretación de sus comportamientos, así como mediante la identificación de las personas con las aves marinas y su quehacer como quienes pescan. Es por lo descrito, que el objetivo de esta guía es divulgar la riqueza biológica de las aves de isla Caballo, así como la herencia biocultural que albergan los saberes locales respecto a ellas.
