In recent decades, a significant debate has emerged in academic and scientific circles around the origin and recognition of concepts such as "ecosystem services" (ES) and "environmental services" (ES), as well as the search for policies and market mechanisms that allow them to be consolidated and effectively used for environmental protection. Debates surrounding these concepts occur at the international level, making it necessary to explain how the discourse and concerns raised at the macro level are implemented by countries in their territories. Likewise, new knowledge generated at the micro level must be considered in the formulation of national and international policies. The article begins with a recap of the evolution of these terms in the academic literature, then reviews their specific use in Costa Rica, and finally presents some concluding reflections.
