The promotion of recreational reading in community spaces is addressed through a workshop for the creation of “libros cartoneros” (cardboard-made books) held in Parque La Libertad, in Patarrá de Desamparados, in San José, Costa Rica, between April and May 2022, with the participation of 16 members of the community, who created their own books using public domain literary works and reused cardboard covers. The workshop generated an awareness regarding the cultural and educational value of the book, the editorial process, and the collective experience, which materialized in a cartonera popular library. It is essential to improve the relationship with the institution throughout the process and to actively involve the civic agency to give continuity to the project. It is recommended to replicate these workshops in educational and communal spaces, as well as reading clubs and creative writing workshops to promote reading from and for the communities.
