There are notable and significant relationships between the painting of the Sevillian Diego Velázquez and the Spanish literary aesthetic-ideological context of the 17th century. The themes, the pictorial composition and the effects of meaning of the main Velázquez paintings are associated with the key issues of the worldview of the literary Baroque. Paintings such as “Las Meninas” represent the theme of the ambiguity of artistic signs, an image of the ambiguities of human existence; this is how his portraits of Philip IV conceive reality, and the scenes of religious, mythological or everyday themes also express the great themes of the major literary voices of Spanish literature (Quevedo, Lope, Góngora, Gracián). Their underlying theme: the fragility of life, the contradictions and disillusionment of the senses. And within this panorama, the world is like a great theater, a fiction; such is the essence of the baroque.
