This paper addresses the perceptions of Costa Rican citizens regarding politics and democracy during the first decade of the 21st century, based on an analysis of data from several surveys conducted by the Institute of Social Studies in Population at the National University since 2000. The information studied suggests that Costa Rican citizens view the democratic system and the country's political class with increasing suspicion. Furthermore, a considerable segment of the population appears to view democracy simply as a procedural act, without excluding other elements, but these would be secondary to this primary and paramount aspect
