Reflexiones sobre la traducción

Abstract

La traducción es uno de los géneros literarios más antiguos; existe desde que existe la literatura; existe desde el momento en que una lengua se enfrentó a otra, aquel momento en que surgió la necesidad, o simplemente el deseo, de expresar en una lengua las ideas, conceptos, historias -lo que fuera- ya expresados en otra. Pero a pesar de tan respetable alcurnia, a pesar de su aceptación universal, aunque quizá inconsciente, como género indispensable, cotidiano, ineludible, la traducción vive hoy, ha vivido siempre, la vida de un género poco y mal comprendido, desconocido casi totalmente en su esencia. Entre los géneros literarios sigue siendo una disciplina bastarda y menospreciada; su naturaleza, sus procesos y problemas, y -no nos quepa duda- sus grandes logros, sus innegables contribuciones a la civilización, ignorados. Ante el arte de la traducción -no creo que todavía pueda aspirar a llamarse ciencia- nos sentimos algo incómodos porque no sabemos qué hacer de él. Y ante esta incomodidad, esta confusión, buscamos refugio en clisés: traduttore, traditore, o en calumnias: La traducción es como la mujer; si es fiel no es bella, y si es bella no es fiel (calumnia tanto a la mujer como a la traducción, dicho sea de paso), les belZes infidèles, etc.Translation is one of the oldest literary genres; it exists since the literature exists; It exists from the moment that one language faced another, that moment when the need arose, or simply the desire, to express in one language the ideas, concepts, stories - whatever it was - already expressed in another. Among literary genres it remains a bastardized and despised discipline; its nature, its processes and problems, and - let us have no doubt - its great achievements, its undeniable contributions to civilization, ignored. Faced with the art of translation - I don't think it can still claim to be called science - we feel somewhat uncomfortable because we don't know what to make of it. And faced with this discomfort, this confusion, we seek refuge in cliches: traduttore, traditore, or slander: Translation is like women; if it is faithful it is not beautiful, and if it is beautiful it is not faithful (slander both the woman and the translation, incidentally), les belles infidèles
