Ítem Folktales and Short Stories to Blend Culture and Language Competence(Editorial Universidad Nacional, 2020-07-20) Olivares, Cinthya; Altamirano Alvarado, JorgeThe aim of this research is to study the use of literature-based cultural material to reinforce speaking and writing skills by using folktales (general culture) and short stories (home culture) in oral and written expression in the English Teaching major. The analysis of a questionnaire for teachers and students indicates that those texts are rarely used to strengthen the productive skills. Based on this, a proposal has been devised to blend world and home culture with language competence to develop written and oral activities in the classroom.Ítem Indirect learning strategies in university students' EFL development(Asociacion Mexicana de Maestros de Ingles MEXTESOL A.C, 2021) Olivares, Cinthya; Brenes Sánchez, VerónicaThis article aims at raising awareness of the need to implement indirect strategies in the language learning process to maximize results. Although there is a comprehensive classification of indirect learning strategies, a great deal of research and practices in the EFL classroom have been devoted to encouraging and polishing the students’ memory, cognitive, and compensation strategies only (Oxford, 1990). Indeed, metacognitive, affective, social learning strategies in English language development have been overlooked and unexplored without recognizing their essential role in language success. The present study explores quantitative and qualitative data and is developed through a case study analysis. The sample population was comprised of 50 students who were either studying English Teaching or pursuing an Associate degree in English along with six teachers from the English Teaching faculty, all from Universidad Nacional, Pérez Zeledón Regional Campus in Costa Rica. A student and a teacher questionnaire allowed the researchers to collect and analyze the data. The results revealed the types of indirect learning strategies least used and most encouraged by both learners and teachers respectively. In light of this, researchers recommend several ways to implement MAS strategies, promote an enriched vision to teach a language class using a broader array of techniques and activities, and enable both teachers and students to become more effective stakeholders of the teaching-learning process.Ítem R2D2: an effective model to incorporate ICTs in the EFL classroom?(Universidad de Costa Rica. Instituto de Investigación en Educación (INIE), 2020-01-01) Olivares, Cinthya; Brenes Sanchez, Veronica; Valverde-Marín, EvelynInformation and Communication Technologies (ICT) in English language teaching have become effective tools to boost meaningful learning. In an EFL environment, the need to apply a model to incorporate web tools and free apps in the classroom takes prominence for teachers at the university level. The present study is an attempt at determining the effectiveness of the implementation of the Read-Reflect-Display and Do (R2D2) model by Bonk and Zhang (2006) through the design and application of a booklet of activities used by a group of 14 students of the Associate’s program in English and 17 students of the Bachelor’s degree in English Teaching at Universidad Nacional, Brunca Branch. Due to its nature, this research encompasses a case study with a descriptive scope. The design and implementation will be analyzed through an empirical predictive and retrospective evaluation considering the administration of a teacher and a student questionnaire and a focus group. The instruments were administered to 31 students and 7 teachers. The results of the analysis led to conclude that the model implemented in the booklet of activities proposed was effective to integrate ICTs to the learning process of a second language and, at the same time, innovate with the techniques used to incorporate the didactic strategies in this type of class. In order to safeguard the effectiveness of the R2D2 model, it is worth considering the teacher’s interest and willingness to use the technologies involved.Ítem Strategies for learning vocabulary in and outside the classroom(Portal de Revistas Académicas UCR, 2019-09-12) Araya Ríos, Jacqueline; Gamboa Sánchez, BeatrizAn important part of learning a language is acquiring vocabulary in or-der to apply it to the other aspects that are studied. Language teach-ers can aid students in upgrading their lexical information by using strategies that will focus their attention on meaning. Lexical learning should be a constructive process focused on finding out the meaning. As students advance from one level to another in their language learning, they will expand the amount of words they understand and use. They will also broaden the amount of information they have of a particular word. Consequently, this increases their ability to communicate when it is integrated with the structures they have also learned. In this regards, Teichroew proposed that “vocabulary knowledge can best be represented as a continuum with the initial stage being recognition and the final one production” (as cited in Gass and Selinker, 2008, p. 452). ESL teachers usually employ different strategies for lexicon learning in and outside the classroom. This article discusses the role of false cognates, affixation, and the context as key vocabulary learning strategies that may enhance the learner’s competence in L2.Ítem The Importance of English for the Costa Rican Economy and Curriculum(EUNA, 2022-02-17) Brand Fonseca, Kevin Armando; Segura Arias , RogerEste estudio de caso analiza el papel que del idioma inglés en la economía y el currículo costarricense.
