Ítem A change laboratory professional development intervention to motivate university teachers to identify and overcome barriers to the integration of ICT(Outlines -Critical Practice Studies, 2018-05-11) Castro, WillyChange is one of the central aims of professional development for information and communication technologies integration in education. Studies on the use of ICT in education highlights the large investments in infrastructure and professional development, and the limited results in students learning. Teachers’ professional development for ICT integration in education (TPD-ICT) has evolved from the development of technical skills to pedagogical skills and content-related knowledge. The gold standard and design-based approaches have dominated TDP-ICT. This study presents the Change Laboratory (CL) method as a formative intervention to motivate teachers to identify and overcome the barriers to ICT integration. The results showed that a professional development intervention based on CL stimulates transformative agency in the participants. Six forms of transformative agency, namely resisting, criticizing, explicating, envisioning, committing to actions, and taking actions, were found during the CL. The transformative agency was essential to motivate teachers to identify and propose a model solution to overcome both first-order and second-order contextual barriers.Ítem An activity theory approach to study barriers of faculty regarding technology integration in higher education(10th International Technology, Education and Development Conference. Inted, 2016-03-09) Castro, WillyInformation and communication technologies are instruments for supporting new ways of teaching and learning. Nevertheless, its impact concerning scope has not reached the expected level. This strain between benefits and impact has been inquired from the perspective of barriers of teachers to use technology. Ertmer’s approach establishes first-order and second-orders barriers as hinderers for teacher’s adoption of technology. The study intends to answer what are the barriers existing in the socalled enthusiastic faculty teachers regarding technology integration in Education? Findings call for a reconceptualization in the study of barriers arguing that the teaching process is a complex and dynamic activity that needs to be examined from a collective perspective. Cultural-Historical Activity Theory is the theoretical framework used in the study. It concludes with the necessity of overcoming the existing dichotomies between enthusiastic-resistant teachers, the intrinsic-extrinsic barriers, and claims for passing from an individual to a collective approach to ICT integration in education.Ítem Challenges of Professional Development for Technology Integration in Higher Education(Universidad ORT, Uruguay, 2021-07-08) Castro, WillyLos modelos, enfoques y programas de desarrollo profesional docente (TPD) han contribuido en cierta medida a superar las barreras que el profesorado en Educación Superior experimenta para la adopción de las Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación (TIC) para el aprendizaje de los alumnos. From professors’ barriers to organisational conditions in ICT integration in higher education(2018) Castro, Willy; Nyvang, TomThe responsibility of innovation with ICT in education has mainly been placed on professors as pivotal to adoption. However, professors are part of complex organisations with inherent obstacles related to their cultural and historical conditions. Despite some studies have stablished the complexity of internal and external barriers separately, others highlight on the importance of considering teachers’ beliefs and contextual factors together. In this regard, the article aims to explore the underlying organisational factors affecting professors’ adoption and institutional integration of technology, considering the professor as part of the organization. It contributes to the field of limitations and obstacles of ICT adoption, transcending the teachers’ barriers approach toward organizational multi-dimensional limitations. The article describes the process of adoption of ICT as non-linear process of discovering barriers and proposing strategies to overcome them. Rather, as a process of development in which solving conflicts can generate other that must be contextually and collectively addressed. The findings contribute to the development of policies and strategies of professional development. The theoretical approach draws upon the cultural-historical activity theory as a tool to transcend the predominant study of barriers from teachers’ perceptions and to obtain a comprehensive view of the obstacles restricting the adoption and integration of technology for teaching and learning purposes in higher education.
