A 16 week externship was developed at the Veterinary Hospital of the Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science Faculty of the São Paulo University in Brazil (HOVET-USP), from July 1 st to October 31st, 2012; for approximately 563 effective work hours. The 16 weeks were divided as follows: two periods of four weeks each at the Diagnostic Imaging Department (Radiology-Tomography and Ultrasonography) and the Small Animal Clinical Medicine Department (Internal Medicine and Emergency Service) and other eight weeks at the Small Animal Surgery Department. Throughout these working periods in each department, a total of 2.251 patients were received; 302 in surgery (in which the student participated either as assistant or observer in approximately 60 surgical procedures), 200 in ultrasound, 560 in radiology-tomography, 773 in internal medicine and 416 in emergency service. This paper describes the working dynamic through each department at HOVET-USP named before and the activities developed by the student. This paper also includes a detailed descriptive-statistic report about the cases attended in this medical center, additionally a clinical report of a patient from the Small Animal Surgery Department with a diagnostic of Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA).
