Shrimp grown in ponds were used to evaluate the action of the hormones 17-a-OH-progesterone, progesterone and ß estradiol on the gonadal maturation in female Penaeus vannamei of 23.0 ± 1.0 g, 26.0 ± 1.0 g, 27.0 ± 1.0 and 29.7 ± 2.0 g of average weight. Four experiments were carried out in which the hormones were applied in injected form at the level of the third segment. abdominal. Three concentrations were evaluated (0.01 µg / g, 0.1 µg / g and 0.2 µg / g of body weight). The determination of the maturity stages was made by observing changes in the size and coloration of the gonads and by the light microscope observation of the histological sections. It was found that 23.0 ± 1.0 g females do not mature despite ocular ablation, possibly due to the fact that they are very young and are not physiologically ready to develop the entire vitellogenic process.
