The present research, entitled “Memory in Augustine's ‘De Civitate Dei’ and its correspondence with the art of the High Middle Ages”, makes an aesthetic formulation based on the notion of memory in Augustine's thought, present in the text “De Civitate Dei”, and its relationship with the artistic production of the High Middle Ages. The first chapter explores the notion of truth according to Augustine and its relationship with divine reason. Following Plato, truth is a property of thought and language, consisting in that our judgments conform to the reality they are intended to reflect. Augustine criticizes the multiplicity of gods in the Roman world and their lack of an intrinsic law. For him, the pagan gods never established a doctrine for leading a righteous life. Augustine values Christianity by contrasting it with the pagan world, associating truth with divine reason and memory. Memory operates as the residue that preserves the understanding of the idea of God as the source of knowledge. The process of remembering, reconstructing and elaborating on the background of Greek culture and its relation to Christianity facilitates the explanation of the history of Christianity.
