The world is eagerly awaiting a vaccine and the necessary treatments to contain the human, social, and economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. But how can affordable access to medical innovations be ensured once effective and safe solutions are found? And how can we prevent powerful governments from securing vaccines and medicines for their own citizens, while the poorest countries are left out? The Government of Costa Rica has proposed to WHO to lead a global effort to pool intellectual rights over technologies for the detection, prevention, control and treatment of Covid-19. Costa Rica itself is working on solutions for the treatment of Covid-19, based on the use of blood plasma.
