Indigenous communities have developed remarkably fine-tuned ways of life in their local environment. Many of these environments are less modified and degraded than the surrounding areas. Because they are often primarily oriented toward self-sufficiency and only secondary mode or surplus production for trade, their traditional economies and technologies are often environmentally sound.
