Resumen
Este artículo ofrece una reseña histórica de las universidades públicas de Costa Rica. Desde los tiempos de la colonia, nuestros gobernantes han dado prueba constante de un elevado interés por la educación pública. Ya para mediados de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, la enseñanza primaria fue declarada obligatoria, por ley, y costeada por el Estado.
This article provides a historical review of Costa Rica's public universities. Since colonial times, our rulers have given constant proof of a strong interest in public education. By the middle of the second half of the 19th century, primary education was declared compulsory by law and paid for by the State.
