The effect of serotonin (5-HT, 5-hydroxytryptamine) on the induction of maturation and spawning of wild female P. vannamei, with an average weight of 56g, was investigated using two concentrations of 5-HT (50 µg / g and 15 µg / g of body weight). The effect of 5-HT was compared with that produced by unilateral ablation of the ocular peduncle and the application of saline solution at 0.85% NaCl. Females injected with 5-HT had a higher number of advanced stages of ovarian development and spawning than those injected with saline, although less than ablated females. This indicates that 5-HT treatment induces ovarian maturity and spawning of P. vannamei. It was observed that the higher concentration of 5-HT induced ovarian maturity in a shorter time and also produced a greater number of spawning, which indicates a possible dependence relationship of the induction to ovarian maturity with the concentration of 5-HT. The quality of spawning evaluated as number of nauplii and eggs per spawning, percentage of fertile eggs and hatching per spawning was statistically similar for all treatments, showing novelties similar to those reported by commercial systems. With the ablation technique, the quality between successive spawning was compared, showing that there is no statistically significant difference (P> 0.05)
