Factors that Prompted a Sample of Female Students to Choose an IT Career. A Regionalized Exploratory Study at Three National University Campuses

Abstract

Resumen. El presente trabajo es un trabajo exploratorio que revela la percepción de algunos de los estudiantes de la carrera de Informática de tres campus de la Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica sobre la motivación que han tenido para incursionar en su actual carrera de estudios. Para ello se desarrolló un formulario a través de Google Forms, el cual se aplicó durante el primer semestre de 2022, obteniendo respuesta de 87 estudiantes del segundo al cuarto año de la carrera en tres diferentes regiones donde se imparte la carrera, con el propósito identificar algunos factores que motivaron a estas mujeres a estudiar esta carrera y conocer cuáles fueron las principales habilidades que desarrollaron durante su formación y que sea un insumo para colaborar con futuros proyectos para motivar a más mujeres a estudiar esta área de la ciencia, la tecnología, ingenieria y matematicas (PROVENIR).

Abstract. The present work is an exploratory work that reveals the perception of some of the students of the Informatics career of three campuses of the National University of Costa Rica about the motivation they have had to venture into their current study career. For this, a form was developed through Google Forms, which was applied during the first semester of 2022, obtaining a response from 87 students from the second to the fourth year of the career in three different regions where the career is taught, with the purpose to identify some factors that motivated these women to study this career and to know what were the main skills that they developed during their training and that it be an input to collaborate with future projects to motivate more women to study this area of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
