For the purposes of this research, the problem is formulated as follows: What is the incidence on academic performance in the completion and accreditation test of basic general education in Mathematics, when receiving private classes in this subject, in the Night Schools of Circuit 01, Pérez Zeledón Regional, in the 2007 school year? This research focuses on the importance of knowing the causes of a problem and how to work to solve it, in order to be disclosed to interested parties. To the students to analyze the background that induces them to seek private classes, to the teachers to reflect on the work done in their lessons so that this is not necessary, to the parents in their work of supervising the course of their children in school and to the directors as support to this process. It is intended to call the attention of parents, so that they guide their children to take advantage of the contributions of the studies carried out in the schools. At the same time, to inform teachers about the students' feelings when seeking external support, to be taken into account in future teaching processes. In addition, to create awareness in students of the responsibility involved in the learning process. The research is descriptive-explanatory, and the study population consisted of 19 ninth grade students of the Pérez Zeledón Night School and 11 students of the Sinaí Night School, in addition to their respective mathematics teachers. A questionnaire was applied to all subjects for data collection. The analysis of the information obtained indicates that private classes have little influence on academic performance; most of the young people who attended these classes obtained grades between regular and deficient. Students attend private mathematics classes mainly in search of techniques to facilitate the use of the calculator.
