What impact will the pandemic have on our contemporary society in the medium and long term, and how will we face the crossroads of the present and the future from public universities? The answers to these two questions imply, in our opinion, a process of pedagogical innovation and also in the areas of research and academic production in accordance with the mission of university systems that do not work for profit, but have as their fundamental mission the altruistic service to the well-being of society as a whole and to the national and regional interest in Latin America. The Center for General Studies of the National University of Costa Rica, for many years has followed a line of teaching, research, extension and production guided by the principles and purposes of humanist thought and action in this century, and the development of new proposals to advance interdisciplinary work for the study of complex and hypercomplex systems. in a new epistemological perspective initiated by the epistemologist Rolando García (1982) in a series of foundational works. This brief essay will be developed in three main parts: 1. A basic diagnosis of the global situation before and after the pandemic; 2. The importance in both general situations (but emphasizing the new aggravating phenomena in the post-pandemic stage that we are experiencing today) of academic work in all the fundamental areas of the work of public universities; 3. Outline of new humanistic and interdisciplinary guidelines to contribute to our academic activity in these turbulent times.
