Pasantía en medicina interna de especies de compañía en el Hospital de Especies Menores y Silvestres de la Universidad Nacional, Costa Rica y en bovinos en explotaciones ganaderas en los cantones de San Carlos y Río Cuarto, Costa Rica.

Resumen
Este documento es un informe de una pasantía de 320 horas realizada del 03
de enero de 2022 al 12 de marzo de 2022, realizada en el Hospital de Especies
Menores y Silvestres (HEMS-UNA) y en explotaciones ganaderas en los cantones de
Río Cuarto y San Carlos por cuatro semanas en cada sitio.
El objetivo principal de esta pasantía era reforzar y aplicar los conocimientos
adquiridos, durante la carrera de medicina de veterinaria, en especies menores y
bovinos. Para lograr dicha meta, se participó en la atención y manejo de 200 casos de
especies menores; 30 felinos (15%) y 170 caninos (85%) y 1000 pacientes bovinos.
Con respecto a las especies de compañía atendidas, el sistema más afectado
fue el gastrointestinal en caninos con un total de 39 perros (22.94%) y el nefro-urinario
en felinos con 7 gatos (23.33%). Las pruebas complementarias más utilizadas fueron
el hemograma, 139 en caninos (81.76%) y 25 felinos (83.33%) y las químicas
sanguíneas; 127 pruebas en caninos (74.70%) y 25 en felinos (83.33%), otros
procedimientos que se realizaron fueron diagnósticos por imágenes, biopsias y otros.
Relacionando con los bovinos, 990 animales (99%) fueron hembras y la mayoría
pertenecientes a fincas de producción cárnica, 690 animales de ganado de cría (69%)
y 310 animales de lechería (31%). Los procedimientos más realizados fueron la
evaluación de condición corporal en 997 animales (99.7 %) y palpación rectal en 980
vacas (98 %). Otros procedimientos realizados fueron aplicación parenteral y vaginal
de medicamentos, sincronización de celos, inseminación artificial, entre otros.
This document is a report of a 320-hour internship carried out from January 3rd , 2022, to March 12th of the same year, it was done at the “Hospital de Especies Menores y Silvestres” (HEMS-UNA) and in livestock farms in the cantons of Río Cuarto and San Carlos for four weeks at each place. The main goal of this externship was to strengthen and apply the knowledge acquired during the veterinary medicine career in small animals and bovines. To achieve this goal, I took part in the care and management of 200 clinical cases of small animals; 30 felines (15%) and 170 canines (85%) and 1000 bovine patients. Regarding the companion animals, the most affected system was the gastrointestinal in canines with a total of 39 dogs (22.94%) and the nephron-urinary system in felines with 7 cats (23.33%). The most used complementary tests were the blood count, 139 in canines (81.76%) and 25 in felines (83.33%) and the blood chemistry tests; 127 in dogs (74.70%) and 25 in cats (83.33%), other procedures that were done were diagnostic images, biopsies and so forth. Related to cattle, 990 animals (99%) were females and the majority belonged to meat production farms, 690 breeding cattle animals (69%) and 310 dairy cattle animals (31%). The most performed procedures were the Body Condition Scoring in 997 animals (99.7 %) and rectal palpation in 980 cows (98 %). Other procedures performed were parenteral and vaginal medication application, heat synchronization, artificial insemination, and so forth.
