This article looks at the social elements that an exploration of religious signs should consider. We first describe the location of the written word (letter) within the history of the West, however, we focus on the thesis of J.J. Rousseau on writing and signs. In this tour we will follow Derrida's analytical criteria on writing (grammatology), so that we can suggest some lines that delimit the task of understanding religious signs, a moment of social incidence of theology in Latin America.
