The present work was carried out between October 1998 and July 1999, in the vicinity of the South Inter-American Highway. It was born as an effort of the La Amistad-Pacífico Conservation Area for the conservation and management of the collareja pigeon in the Cerro de la Muerte. The objective was to determine the main plant species that make up the diet of the collareja pigeon (Columba fasciata) in Cerro de la Muerte. With the help of members of the Costa Rican Fishing, Shooting and Hunting Association, the esophageal contents of the pigeons harvested at the main hunting sites in the study area were collected. The esophageal content was extracted and examined under a stereoscope to identify it to the lowest possible taxon. The frequency of appearance for each species was calculated to determine the importance of each species of plant in the diet of the pigeon. Local knowledge was evaluated through a questionnaire to hunters and local inhabitants through which biological and ecological information on the species, as well as the main foraging sites, was collected. Parallel to the field work, a collection of reference plants was made to facilitate species identification.
