La caída de Aristide : crónica de una frustración popular

Abstract

Ya en «El Catecismo Político de Jean Bertrand Aristide» ofrecido en noviembre de 1994, adelantaba la publicación de otros dos libros referidos como este a la realidad haitiana que me tocó vivir como embajador argentino en aquel país entre los años 1989 y 1993. Se trata, el primero de ellos de éste que hoy entrego, «LA CAIDA DE ARISTIDE - Crónica de una Frustración Popular» y del que, confío será editado en breve bajo el título «LA ODISEA DE LA DEMOCRACIA EN HAITI».

Los tres naturalmente poseen unidad temática. En el primero de ellos, «El Catecismo Político de Jean Bertrand Aristide», intento explicar los fundamentos ideológicos que nutrieron al sacerdote-presidente y que representan el antecedente necesario para explicar su conducta política. En este, pretendo cronicar los hechos que precedieron y siguieron a la caída del Gobierno de Aristide, tal como los vimos desde nuestro punto de observación, la Embajada Argentina. Y digo crónica, y limito su alcance a lo que pude ver desde mi puesto de observación, consciente de que no está dentro de mis posibilidades, escribir la historia de la Caída de Aristide desde la óptica científica con que lo puede hacer un historiador y menos aún elaborar una tesis o un ensayo de sociología política acerca de las causas que motivaron tales hechos.

Lo que hago simplemente, es una labor, más bien de carácter periodístico. Digamos, lo de un observador atento que quiere trasmitir lo que impresionaron a sus ojos y su espíritu.

Lo hago consiente de la responsabilidad que asumo ante mis lectores, que llegan a estas páginas buscando una información veraz y objetiva, acerca de los acontecimientos que rodearon la caída de Aristide, lejos de mí, está la intención de influir sobre el ánimo de aquellos, con juicios de valor apresurados. De eso se encargará la historia.

Por supuesto que estoy comprometido con los valores de la democracia y que repugna a mis sentimientos cualquier acto que atente contra ellos. Y toda mi obra se halla influida por esta actitud política, pero no quiero en estas páginas enjuiciar a nadie ni erigirme en fiscal de esta parte de la historia haitiana…

Already in "The Political Catechism of Jean Bertrand Aristide" offered in November 1994, I anticipated the publication of two other books referring to the Haitian reality that I had to live as Argentine Ambassador in that country between 1989 and 1993. The first of them is the one I am delivering today, "THE FALL OF ARISTIDE - Chronicle of a Popular Frustration" and the one I trust will soon be published under the title "THE ODYSSEY OF DEMOCRACY IN HAITI". The three naturally have thematic unity. In the first one, "The Political Catechism of Jean Bertrand Aristide", I try to explain the ideological foundations that nourished the priest-president and that represent the necessary background to explain his political behavior. In this one, I intend to chronicle the events that preceded and followed the fall of Aristide's government, as we saw them from our point of observation, the Argentine Embassy. And I say chronicle, and I limit its scope to what I could see from my observation post, aware that it is not within my possibilities to write the history of the fall of Aristide from the scientific point of view that a historian can do, and even less to elaborate a thesis or a political sociology essay about the causes that motivated such events.

What I simply do is a work, more of a journalistic nature. Let's say, that of an attentive observer who wants to transmit what impressed his eyes and his spirit.

I do it conscious of the responsibility I assume before my readers, who come to these pages looking for truthful and objective information about the events surrounding the fall of Aristide, far from me, is the intention of influencing the mood of those, with hasty value judgments. That is what history will history will take care of that.

Of course I am committed to the values of democracy and any act that goes against them is repugnant to my feelings. And all my work is influenced by this political attitude, but I do not want in these pages to pass judgment on anyone or to set myself up as a prosecutor of this part of Haitian history...
