Del espontaneísmo a la acción concertada: los trabajadores bananeros de Costa Rica 1900-1955

Abstract

La explotación de los trabajadores bananeros se veía acrecentada por mecanismos colaterales impuestos a estos por los productores del ramo. Hubo huelgas por aumento salarial en la mayoría de los casos, pero fueron movimientos aprovechados a la vez para plantear la redefinición de la sociedad y sus orientaciones políticas, y en ellos cobra cuerpo un proyecto social en el que aspectos como la vivienda, la salud, la redistribución del ingreso, la defensa de la soberanía e intereses nacionales, la regulación de las relaciones laborales, la libertad de expresión, de asociación y el" derecho efectivo a la instrucción y al trabajo serían ubicados como aspectos centrales de la inferida y acaso sonada "República Obrera". Supieron enfrentar el reto de su tiempo, revirtiendo su adversa y amarga vivencia en impulsos vitales de redefinición y cambio social y lograron con mucha más gloria que pena acometer la inacabada empresa de conquistar para sí y para los demás un orden más justo y tolerante y un país más soberano y respetable, legando así a la posteridad la más noble herencia de rectitud y responsabilidad ante la historia.

The exploitation of the banana workers was increased by collateral mechanisms imposed on them by the banana producers. There were strikes for wage increases in most cases, but these movements were also used to propose the redefinition of society and its political orientations, and in them a social project took shape in which aspects such as housing, health, income redistribution, the defense of sovereignty and national interests, the regulation of labor relations, freedom of expression, association and the "effective right to education and work" would be placed as central aspects of the inferred and perhaps resounding "Workers' Republic". They knew how to face the challenge of their time, turning their adverse and bitter experience into vital impulses of redefinition and social change and succeeded with much more glory than sorrow to undertake the unfinished enterprise of conquering for themselves and for others a more just and tolerant order and a more sovereign and respectable country, thus bequeathing to posterity the noblest heritage of righteousness and responsibility before history.
