The purpose of this research was to analyze the needs of first-year students, which determine the presence of a counselor at the school, and how the absence of a counselor can impede or hinder the integral development of the student population. The research responds to a qualitative study, uses an ethnographic methodology and its approach is educational ethnographic. The literature consulted shows the importance of a counselor in any institution, his profile and functions within the university, in addition, the university environment, self-esteem, decision making, self-knowledge, stress, vocational-occupational, desertion, life project, vocational maturity, knowledge of the environment, aptitudes and abilities, family, peer groups, media and economic aspect, university methodology and mission and vision of the university were taken into account. In order to record the systematization process, instruments were used for first-year students, academics and officials of the Student Life Department, all from the National University, through in-depth interviews. The population consisted of 24 students, 6 academics and 3 student life officers. The main results show that the counselor is fundamental within the headquarters to serve the university community and work together with academics and officials for the benefit of the university. They point out that the counselor is elemental for the transition process from high school to university, guiding students in the formulation of their life project and in the establishment of goals and priorities. The main recommendations are directed to the Dean's Office of the National University, Department of Student Life, academics, counselor; and to the students in the observed context.
