This exploratory and qualitative research proposes an understanding of the disciplinary characteristics of planning within the framework of contemporary discussions on the issue of delimitation in the Costa Rican academic context, based on a three-dimensional model composed of epistemological, social, and institutional dimensions. From a methodological standpoint, 12 semi-structured interviews were conducted with expert individuals. The final graduation project (TFG) allows the conclusion that planning, in this context, can be considered an academic discipline, as it possesses an organized community, a systematized theoretical body, and a defined object of study: organizational management. Additionally, secondary-level objects were identified, such as participation, technical instruments, development, the future, and social contexts. It was also evidenced that planning is characterized by a participatory, interdisciplinary orientation with a commitment to social inclusion—particularly through its sometimes ambiguous and conflictive link with social promotion, which provides it with an axiological and methodological framework. As recommendations, the study proposes deepening the epistemological dimensions addressed, exploring other perspectives from the philosophy of science, and incorporating approaches such as Bourdieu’s concept of habitus to characterize the academic community. It also suggests investigating the role of planning in Costa Rica’s private sector and critically analyzing the use of tools such as Big Data and Artificial Intelligence.
