Evaluación de la aplicación de tratamientos silviculturales en la sostenibilidad de bosques tropicales en la Región Huetar Norte, Costa Rica

Abstract

La investigación consistió en aplicar dos tratamientos silviculturales (liberación y refinamiento) y un sitio testigo, con tres repeticiones por tratamiento, después del aprovechamiento forestal en un bosque húmedo tropical situado en Pital de San Carlos. Los resultados mostraron que, después de 25 años de aplicados los tratamientos, los valores de referencia se mantuvieron dentro del rango permitido por la norma para el umbral de las especies heliófitas efímeras (15 %) y del área basal (11,6 m²/ha). El incremento medio anual no presenta diferencias significativas, para una probabilidad del 95 %, entre los tratamientos. Además, se realizó una propuesta de manejo que busca obtener las mayores tasas de crecimiento y producción del bosque mediante un manejo forestal adaptativo, el cual consiste en llevar a cabo dos intervenciones silviculturales en diferentes momentos del ciclo de corta. Se utilizaron datos empíricos provenientes de la medición constante de parcelas permanentes de muestreo durante un periodo de 25 años. Se generó una propuesta de manejo silvicultural que contempla realizar dos intervenciones: una al año 4 y la otra al año 8, con una nueva cosecha al año 13. Esta propuesta se justifica, ya que el bosque no sufrió cambios en la composición florística de las especies comerciales.

The research consisted of applying two silvicultural treatments (release and refinement) and a control site, with three replicates per treatment, after logging in a tropical rainforest located in Pital de San Carlos. The results showed that, after 25 years of applying the treatments, the reference values remained within the range permitted by the standard for the threshold of ephemeral heliophytic species (15%) and basal area (11.6 m²/ha). The average annual increase does not show significant differences between treatments, with a 95% probability. In addition, a management proposal was made that seeks to obtain the highest growth and production rates from the forest through adaptive forest management, which consists of carrying out two silvicultural interventions at different times during the cutting cycle. Empirical data from the constant measurement of permanent sample plots over a period of 25 years were used. A silvicultural management proposal was generated that contemplates two interventions: one in year 4 and the other in year 8, with a new harvest in year 13. This proposal is justified, as the forest did not undergo changes in the floristic composition of commercial species.
