It analyzes the book "Latin America. Memory and identity (1491-1992)", by Juan Rafael Quesada Camacho. It outlines that the author wants to rescue Latin American memory and cultural identity, and that he makes an effort and manages to point out a task of commitment and civic spirit of the historian with his science. He points out that five centuries ago Latin America contributed its share of sacrifice to the development of dominant Europe, which established the financial mechanisms and then the agricultural and industrial revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries. That at the Latin American level the subcotinent arises "with an oligarchic power and aligned conscience", which cannot in five centuries break the worst dependency: the mental one. And about the celebration of the "Fourth Centennial of the Discovery" in Costa Rica in 1892, he indicates that there was a lack of criticality in the process, which is why he calls ethics ultramontanism.
