This document compiles the findings of studying the pre-feasibility of replacing oil palm cultivation with watermelon in the canton of Golfito, specifically for the Professional Technical School of Guaycara, as well as initially describes the reasons that generated the interest in this study, as well as the results obtained in each of the studies that make up a pre-feasibility evaluation. This study was developed by Shirley López Chinchilla and Pedro González Prendas, both bachelors in administration and is presented to opt for the degree of Bachelor in Administration with emphasis in Financial Management at the National University, Brunca Regional Headquarters, Coto Campus, in addition, for the development of this study, the beneficiary institution and MAG officials were accompanied. The main question that motivates this study corresponds to the need to know the pre-feasibility of substituting the oil palm crop for watermelon plantation for the Guaycara Professional Technical School, since the school currently has 36 hectares planted with oil palm that has already completed its productive life, so it is in their interest to know if this substitution will generate profitability. The proposed objectives are in line with the analysis models chosen for this project, so each of them responds to the different sections that make up a prefeasibility study, which are: a) Conduct a market study to identify the supply and demand of watermelon in the domestic market; b) Define through a study the technical and operational requirements of watermelon production; c) Identify the minimum legal and environmental parameters that the project must meet to operate. d) Prepare a financial study to evaluate watermelon production yields; and e) Analyze the financial yields of watermelon compared to oil palm. In this case, the market, technical-operational, legal and environmental requirements for watermelon production in the canton of Golfito are analyzed and all financial information is summarized in a financial study to evaluate the profitability of production, which is compared with the expected profitability of oil palm production and thus identify the main option that is financially feasible for the institution. After analyzing the information, it was determined that watermelon as an agri-food product, has a market and marketing channels for its sale, on the other hand, when making the financial comparison with oil palm, it showed in its three scenarios favorable numbers to this one, so that a substitution of oil palm crop for watermelon would generate positive returns for the Administrative Board of the C.T.P. Guaycara.
