Vector-borne agents are those that are transmitted by vectors such as mosquitoes, which breed and live near contaminated and uncontaminated water. Millions of people suffer from infections with vector-borne agents, which generally cause illnesses ranging from mild influenza to fatal encephalitis. Because non-human primates are susceptible to a wide variety of infectious agents similar or identical to those affecting humans, we set out to detect the presence of parasitic and microbial vector-borne agents in the four species of monkeys present in natural habitats in Costa Rica.
